Wednesday Night Technique Class with Brook Ferguson

Welcome to Brook Ferguson’s second session of the Wednesday Evening Technique Class. This online group will meet on Wednesday evenings from 6pm-7:00pm Mountain Standard Time. The course begins on January 6, 2021 and will conclude on April 14, 2021.

The goal of this course is to have all participants memorize the Taffanel & Gaubert 17 Daily Exercises. Each week, a new series of exercises will be studied and prepared for class. During the Zoom sessions, we will begin with a group check in that will address comments, experiences and questions. Each participant will then play excerpts from the weekly exercises from memory and receive feedback.

Tips for memorization will occupy a large portion of the instruction. Other major subjects of the course are: articulation, harmonic analysis, pattern recognition, intonation, tempo challenges and technical facility. Another skill that will be developed in this course will be scheduling practice time and developing a rotation of these daily exercises to stay in peak technical shape after the course ends. In carving out time to truly learn these exercises inside and out over the course of 3 1/2 months, each participant will have invested in a lifetime of technical fluency. Your future self will thank you!

My teaching style is heavy on praise and honest with the aim of being helpful. I operate on the presumption that the student’s goal is to strive for personal excellence. The true pursuit of excellence hinges on cultivating humility. I believe strongly in delivering critical feedback as productively as possible. I also strive to communicate big ideas in simple ways. Sometimes this involves a metaphorical presentation. Sometimes it is black and white. Sometimes it is anecdotal. And sometimes, it involves demonstration.

In fact, one of my favorite ways to assimilate information is by listening to someone show me what is possible and then attempting to do it. So, be prepared for me to ride the technique train alongside all of the participants, metronome and tuner in tow! For me, striving to be a great performer is an integral part of being a great teacher. After all, inspiration is at the heart of learning. The other part is making observations about how you learn and tailoring my approach to meet you in that sweet spot.

Rules of the Road:

The goal is to establish group solidarity and a positive, inspirational learning environment. Each participant will enthusiastically engage in one hour a day of practice on the weekly selections and journal their practice. Each participant must be present at every class with a journal, metronome and tuner.

If individual preparation is persistently lacking, late to class or if one class is missed, you will privately be asked to discontinue the course. Obviously, this would be less than ideal. But by communicating these expectations up front, I hope to build something truly exceptional among the group members! So before you commit, give this a bit of thought and make sure you feel good about these simple, yet demanding expectations.

Sometimes, life gives us unexpected circumstances. Excused absences will be granted if the student writes to the Ms. Ferguson beforehand and submits a video recording of their exercises within the week they are scheduled. This is only in the event of a truly extenuating circumstance. Group learning is at the heart of this experience!

Monday Night Masochists: Scale Games

The name “Monday Night Masochists” started as a joke nickname for an incredible group of flutists who participated in a course called “Monday Night Scales Group”. This intrepid group of flutists memorized the entirety of Taffanel et Gaubert’s 17 Daily Exercises over several months. Members expressed an interest in a closed Facebook group for the course and the name Monday Night Masochists was born. A tag line for the group is based on Brook Ferguson’s love of true crime and the My Favorite Murder podcast’s tag line “stay sexy, and don’t get murdered”. Our group pays homage with a twist on that: stay sexy and übenmas. #staysexy&übenmas (German word for practice with Spanish word for more).

Scale Games is inspired by Michel Debost’s rubric for T&G practice cleverly named “Gammes Games”. But in our game, the following structure is in place:

  • Each gamer contributes to the pot

  • Each gamer is randomly assigned to a team each week. Teams are shuffled every week.

  • For four weeks, we will focus on the most challenging exercises to perform from memory which will be voted on by the gamers. Teams are encouraged to organize group practice sessions between games.

  • A range of tempo and articulations for each game’s exercise will be given one week before the game. Order of players will be randomly assigned at the beginning of the game. The team that completes the most flawless group play of the exercise from memory wins.

  • Each player on the winning team gets one win on their record.

  • At the end of the sessions, the member(s) with the most recorded wins will be awarded the pot

  • These games will be private and will not be recorded or distributed. Everyone’s privacy is important and this game is learning-centered, not social media-centered.

Competition is a powerful learning tool when applied with its original intent expressed by the etymology of the word itself- strive together.

Teams are shuffled to prevent a tribal social organization/cliques. Also, it puts an emphasis on individual preparation. Contributing to a team is a great motivator!

Schedule: Monday Nights, 5:30pm-6:30pm, Mountain Standard Time.

  • December 7th- orientation night and meet and greet via Zoom

  • December 14th- game 1

  • December 28th- game 2

  • January 4th- game 3

  • January 11th- game 4

Monday Evening Technique Class with Brook Ferguson

  • Bel Canto Flute Academy- Online Class (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Welcome to Brook Ferguson’s first session of Monday Evening Technique. This online group course will meet Monday evenings at 5pm-6:30pm Mountain Standard Time. The course begins on September 14th 2020 and concludes on Monday, November 30th 2020. Five participants and two auditors will be selected for this first session. As this is the maiden voyage of this course, keeping the class on the small side will guarantee ample individual instruction and time for group discussion.

The goal of this course is to have all participants memorize the Taffanel & Gaubert 17 Daily Exercises. Each week, a new series of exercises will be studied and prepared for class. During the Zoom sessions, each participant will play excerpts of the exercises from memory and receive feedback. There will be time at the end of each class for Q&A.

Tips for memorization will occupy a large portion of the instruction. Other major subjects of the course are: harmonic analysis, pattern recognition, articulation, intonation, tempo challenges and technical facility. Another skill that will be developed in this course will be scheduling practice time and developing a rotation of these daily exercises to stay in peak technical shape after the course ends. In carving out time to truly learn these exercises inside and out over the course of 2.5 months, each participant will have invested in a lifetime of technical fluency. Your future self will thank you!

My teaching style is heavy on praise, yet unabashedly honest. So, be prepared for me to ride the technique train alongside all of the participants, metronome and tuner in tow! For me, striving to be a great performer is 50% of being a great teacher. It establishes credibility. After all, inspiration is at the heart of learning. The other 50% is me observing how you learn and adapting my approach to meet you there.

Rules of the Road:

The goal is to establish group solidarity and a positive, inspirational learning environment. Each participant will enthusiastically engage in one hour a day of practice on the weekly selections and journal their practice. May Performance Class

Ah, the cows...
— Erik Satie

The May performance class will make four to five performance spots available to flutists of all ages and ability levels. Each participant should fill out the webform below. If the selected repertoire requires a pianist, one will be made available. All performers are asked to communicate with the class pianist well in advance, potentially setting up individual rehearsals to prepare optimally for their performances and sending the pianist a PDF of their selected repertoire via email. Each performer will have 25 to 30 minutes total to perform their piece and receive feedback from class attendees and instructors. The fee for each performance spot is $30.00 plus the accompanist fee which should be arranged directly with the class pianist. The fee to audit the class is $10.00. Class will conclude promptly at 7:30pm. The reception following this class will be from 7:30pm-8:00pm.

The culture of this class is of the utmost importance. Each performer should prepare to the best of his or her ability, but not be focused on the comparative performances of others and/or a shallow sense of perfection. We are all capable of improving. Nobody is ‘done’. Our art form needs to be approached with the desire for excellence and the patience and humility needed to improve. Performance is the optimal way to test out the effectiveness and holistic range of a musician’s preparation- the psychological work needed to perform optimally paired with the details and expressive range of the music itself. That is what this class intends to address and improve.

Each participant is expected to listen actively and offer feedback to the performers. This is a way of showing support for our fellow flutists, offering unique view points and giving them a general sense of their performance’s impact. Therefore, being distracted is not acceptable (phones are gross). Learning how to listen is the most important skill a musician can possibly cultivate. And for our future teachers, listening and offering constructive feedback is essential to cultivating this amazing tapestry of tradition that is being woven every day among us.

I am looking forward to hearing you and sharing an evening of inspiration and learning.
