Monday Night Masochists: Scale Games

  • Bel Canto Flute Academy United States (map)

The name “Monday Night Masochists” started as a joke nickname for an incredible group of flutists who participated in a course called “Monday Night Scales Group”. This intrepid group of flutists memorized the entirety of Taffanel et Gaubert’s 17 Daily Exercises over several months. Members expressed an interest in a closed Facebook group for the course and the name Monday Night Masochists was born. A tag line for the group is based on Brook Ferguson’s love of true crime and the My Favorite Murder podcast’s tag line “stay sexy, and don’t get murdered”. Our group pays homage with a twist on that: stay sexy and übenmas. #staysexy&übenmas (German word for practice with Spanish word for more).

Scale Games is inspired by Michel Debost’s rubric for T&G practice cleverly named “Gammes Games”. But in our game, the following structure is in place:

  • Each gamer contributes to the pot

  • Each gamer is randomly assigned to a team each week. Teams are shuffled every week.

  • For four weeks, we will focus on the most challenging exercises to perform from memory which will be voted on by the gamers. Teams are encouraged to organize group practice sessions between games.

  • A range of tempo and articulations for each game’s exercise will be given one week before the game. Order of players will be randomly assigned at the beginning of the game. The team that completes the most flawless group play of the exercise from memory wins.

  • Each player on the winning team gets one win on their record.

  • At the end of the sessions, the member(s) with the most recorded wins will be awarded the pot

  • These games will be private and will not be recorded or distributed. Everyone’s privacy is important and this game is learning-centered, not social media-centered.

Competition is a powerful learning tool when applied with its original intent expressed by the etymology of the word itself- strive together.

Teams are shuffled to prevent a tribal social organization/cliques. Also, it puts an emphasis on individual preparation. Contributing to a team is a great motivator!
