About the Course

Brook Ferguson's 2018 Orchestral Audition Bootcamp is geared towards advanced undergraduates, pre-professional and professional flutists seeking to improve and solidify every aspect of their audition preparation and performance. The five day intensive is open to five to seven flutists. The goal is to have everyone on their feet playing excerpts as often as possible, which necessitates a small group structure. The application deadline is November 22, 2018.

Each morning, the participants will go jogging on the Miami Beach boardwalk, participate in a brief yoga vinyasa in the sand and swim in the beautiful ocean. After a brief pause for breakfast, class will begin at the New World Center.

The focal points of the course are rhythm, intonation, interpretation, breath control and tonal flexibility within the framework of the traditional orchestral audition repertoire. There will also be in depth discussions and mental exercises on overcoming performance anxiety. Peer feedback and mock auditions are a major component in this group's learning experience. Participants are encouraged to bring piccolos and alto flutes.

The final day of the course will be dedicated to recording HD video footage of the participants' auditions for upcoming summer festivals, fellowship orchestra auditions and/or pre-screenings for professional orchestras with Ms. Ferguson's feedback and assistance from the sound booth. The SunTrust Pavilion, which has a beautiful natural acoustic, is equipped with HD cameras and excellent audio equipment. Participants are asked to bring an external hard drive to capture their work.

Housing with roommates is available for a double occupancy apartment for $40.00 per person per night for a double apartment or $75.00 a night for a single apartment. The accommodations are within walking distance of the New World Center. There is an option of cooking and eating together because all of the apartments are equipped with kitchens.

Tuition (including recording) is $500.00.
